Behind-the-Scenes Look: Baymeadows Movers Teams Up with Chipman and OMA to Remove Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most moviegoers walk into a movie theater with their mind on the movie they're about to see. They notice the giant screen, plush seats, and maybe the smell of fresh popcorn. What they don't see is everything happening behind the scenes to make that experience a reality—or what it takes when it's time to phase out decades of equipment and make way for the future.
Recently, Baymeadows Movers had the chance to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a unique commercial moving project via our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). As a team, we assisted with the removal of older projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It was not your typical commercial move. It demanded careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between trusted relocation partners.
Jobs like these are among the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are exactly the same, and that's what makes our work engaging.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
Among the finest parts of commercial moving is the variety.
One week we're relocating an entire school before students return for the new year. The next we're delivering physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Then we are inside a movie theater, carefully disassembling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was notably memorable because it involved removing large digital cinema projection systems, together with several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like traveling back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection was established as the industry standard.
For movie lovers, it was riveting.
For our crew, it was a reflection that every piece of equipment we move has its own story.
Great Projects Begin with Great Planning
Moves like this do not begin when the moving truck pulls up.
Long before the first projector is taken down, our team plans out logistics, scheduling, access points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Partnering with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we oversaw every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed safely and efficiently. One of the biggest advantages of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is having access to a nationwide network of highly experienced commercial movers who uphold the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By pairing Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to carry out the work smoothly from start to finish.
Movie theaters weren't built with equipment removal in mind.
Projection booths tend to be tucked away on upper levels with narrow hallways, tight doorways, and restricted access. Some buildings have elevators, whereas others don't. Moving large projection systems through those spaces requires much more than simply rolling them onto a dolly and making for the truck.
Every challenge has to be anticipated before work even begins.
That's where experience makes the difference.
It's All About More Than Muscle
People often assume moving heavy equipment is just about brute strength.
The honest truth is that commercial moving is about planning, technique, and using the right tools for the job.
Projects like the AMC equipment removal call for specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and seasoned crews who know how to safely maneuver oversized equipment through confined spaces.
Each projector had to be carefully disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and carefully loaded for transport.
Many of these systems are not only heavy—they're also remarkably delicate. One careless bump into a doorway or uneven transition could result in significant damage.
Patience and communication are every bit as important as raw strength.
Protecting the Building Is Just as Important
While our focus is on carefully moving equipment, we're equally focused on protecting the customer's facility.
Commercial properties represent a sizable investment, and even minor repairs can prove disruptive and costly.
When a project is finished, our goal is for customers to remember how easy the whole experience felt, not the moving process itself.
Teamwork Makes the Difference
Sizable commercial moving projects are never a solo undertaking.
Each member of the crew has a specific role, and communication is critical from beginning to end.
One team member may be maneuvering equipment through a doorway while another manages the load. Someone else is tracking clearances, while another team member is readying the next piece for transport.
When veteran crews work in sync, there's a rhythm that emerges. That's a skill that can't be taught overnight.
Seeing our crew work together was a powerful example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same dedication to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Levity Along the Way
Even during challenging commercial projects, it's worthwhile to appreciate the experience.
Being employed inside movie theaters definitely had its perks.
Our crew couldn't help heading downstairs for some movie snacks between jobs on the project. Having spent the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn somehow tasted even better.
Such moments make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also have fun doing it.
Commercial Moving Is More Than Transportation
Plenty of people assume moving companies just load trucks and unload them somewhere else.
Commercial moving is much more than that.
These engagements often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, handling of specialized equipment, and coordinating multiple contractors.
Each customer has different needs.
Certain businesses have to relocate hundreds of employees across a weekend.
Some need sensitive medical equipment moved without disruption.
Some projects occur overnight to limit downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—entail the careful removal of specialized equipment from unique environments.
Each project calls for adaptability, planning, and problem solving.
At Baymeadows Movers, when somebody asks, "Can you help with this?" our first response is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Hands-On Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has proudly served Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and we've come to understand that great projects consistently come down to the same core principles:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll arrive prepared, keep them informed throughout the project, handle their property with care, and solve problems rather than create them.
Whether we're operating inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach is always the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Finish the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Safeguarding a Piece of Movie History
One of the surprising highlights of this project was seeing some of the original 35mm projection systems that once brought countless movies to life.
Well before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines created unforgettable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Standing beside them gave our crew a real appreciation for how much technology has progressed over the years.
It's not every morning that a moving company has the chance to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
For us, it was a moment we will never forget.
